Day 26 (10/8/20)

Here comes Hurricane Delta!

Start: River Mile 585
Finish: River Mile 562
Day Total: 23 Miles
Segment Total: 679 Miles

I was super speedy getting packed up this morning and we were in our boats by 8:30 am! Jon only had to sit in his comfy chair and wait for only 15 or 20 minutes, a new all time record!
Today we started to feel the very outer effects of Hurricane Delta. We paddled under overcast sky’s and hot, humid weather. The air was dead still, not a puff of breeze from any direction. We had 23 miles to get to the boat ramp where out River Angel Park Neff was set to meet us. Knowing it was going to be a short day played tricks on my mind, and the paddle seemed to go on FOREVER!

Part was at the ramp when we arrived at approx 2:00pm. We loaded the boats on his trailer, our gear into the back of his pick-up and off we went. Literally 20 minutes after leaving the dock, the first drops of rain from Hurricane Delta began to fall. Now that’s what I call timing.

Park has a really sweet set up for paddlers, a separate guest house for us to ride out the storm. We got all moved it, showered and headed off with Park and his lovely wife Sharon to a local Italian restaurant for dinner. At the restaurant we met John Keen whom Park did a Source to Sea Mississippi paddle with in 2017. We sat eating pizza and telling river stories for 2 hours. What a fun time!

Tomorrow begins two day of exile from the river while Delta works its way up the river. Our hope is to be back on the river Sunday afternoon and we begin our push to legendary Vicksburg, MS which if all goes well we will arrive at on Thursday.

Jon Wunrow, is a full fledged river pilot!
