Day 9 - Foggy with a chance of Vienna Sausage

Jacobson Camp
River mile 1140
Days Milage - 32.4 miles
Total miles -  201.3 miles

The only good thing about Sucher’s camp is leaving. We arrived during a downpour and the camp as wet, cramped and thick with mosquitos. Even though the sun came out later in the evening, everything we had on the clothes line was soaked this morning. I broke camp in record time and was actually not the last one in my boat!

The weather at launch was low overcast with a layer of fog clinging to the river. I’ve never paddled in conditions like this, it was very dramatic.

After our adventure with thunder storms yesterday, we decided it was best to get to our next camp no later than 4:00 pm, to be settled in before any afternoon T-storm bubbled up. We had identified 3 potential stopping points. The first option was Swimming Bear camp approx 24 miles. Second was county line boat landing 29 miles and last Jacobson Camp 33 miles. As a result, I didn’t make any stops, have a a lovely boat lunch of tortilla and Thai chicken with a Lara bar for desert. My map case sits over the front of my cockpit and also make a great little table.

We did weather checks as we approached each of these locations, but in the end we were able to make it to Jacobson, landing around 4:00 pm. The campground is a primitive campground, we pit toilets. But the sites are nice and open with plenty of space to spread out. There isn’t running water, but there is a spring that has clear and super cold water, a real treat.

Today’s learnings
  • When it’s hot, evaporation is your friend. Wetting my neck gator and spf sleeves once an hour, really helped keep me cool
  • 33 miles in 8.5 hours was very doable. As long as there is no portage.
