Aitkin Campground
River Mile - 1055

Total miles - 286.2 miles
After our delicious dinner, we enjoyed the fire and turned in around 9:00 pm. As usual I fell quickly to sleep. At 1:30 am I was awoken by a load clap of thunder. Then for the next hour and a half, we rode out a big thunder storm. Crazy lightning, winds gusting up to 50 mph and dumping down pouring rain. Our camp as not in an exposed place, so we were safe. Watching my tent cave in from the wind was pretty exiting. The shower building was 30 feet away, so we had that as our backup. Once the storm passed, I was able to fall back to sleep.
My alarm went off at 5:30 so I could be my boat packed and still have to have time for breakfast at Gabby’s Eats & Treats. It was worth it, the breakfast special was 2 pancakes, 2 eggs and 3 slices of bacon for $4.55, which also included my coffee!
Our goal was to paddle to Aitkin Campground, with just like the the one at Palisade is a county park that is walking distance to town. To make Aitkin, we need to paddle 31 miles, a distance we have done several times this trip. Launching at 8:00 am with a thin layer of mist rising up from the water. I really enjoy these peaceful mornings on the river. Alone with my thoughts.
After the first hour, I was really struggling to keep my eyes open. Dozing off and tipping over is not something I want to do! So, over the next 8 hours of paddling, I struggled to stay awake. Eating, drinking, music, audiobooks, all worked for a while, but eventually I was still getting droopy eyed. The last 6 miles I spoke on the phone with Dave and Christina. That really helped make it to the landing at Aitkin.
As is our habit, as soon as we pull our boats into camp we get our tents set up. Today, it was also important since our tents were soaking wet wen we packed them this morning. After getting out gear organized, we walked into town. Aitkin as a nice brewery and restaurant called Block North Brew Pub. Food was good and so was the beer.
