Day 21 - Just the Two of Us

River Mile - 807
Today’s distance - 23 miles
Total distance - 534.9

Even though I was out way late on a school night, I still woke up at 6:00 am this morning. I had a ton of prep to do. I had to organize all the new food I bought yesterday, repackage into single serving packs. Repack my clean clothes and my now dry tent.

Christina drove me back to the marina were Jon and I launched at 10:45. What a couple of bums. That is the latest we launched by at least two hours!

Once we reached Lock and Dam #2 we had been on the water for 3.5 hours. We had the wind at our backs which helped to compensate for the lack of a current. During this stretch we started sharing the river with barges and large pleasure boats.

We discussed today that the river and what we know about paddling it evolves every couple of days.  All we can do in continue to learn and adapt. Today we learned how to handle the large wake waves that pleasure boats and to a lesser extent barges create. Some boats crate wakes that are 3 feet high!

At 5:00, we started looking for a place to camp. We settled on a nice wooded spot with an open beach, plenty high to avoid the wake waves. We had a campfire, Surly beer and cheese, sausage and baget for dinner.

The highlight of camp was a 12 barge tow that passed right in front of our site!
